Over 60% of PASD students rely on school meals. But what happens when they’re not at school? On weekends and long breaks from school we don’t want students wondering how they will eat. That is why the Port Angeles Food Bank created our Friday Food Bag Program, which sends students home with food over weekends, winter break, and spring break.

The Pandemic changed our world forever.  There was before COVID-19 and there is after. The world we know now is entirely new and each day that becomes more and more clear. If we have learned anything in the last 4 years it is that in our small community when things get tough, we really can rely on each other.

In 2020 our community showed up for each other in a way we had never seen before. We saw it first-hand here at the Port Angeles Food Bank. We saw record-breaking donations. We saw community members donating their stimulus checks. We got call after call from you asking, “How can I help?” It was a never-before-seen effort to make sure our community was taken care of.

While students are dealing with mental health struggles as they navigate this new world, many of them now have to worry about where their next meal is coming from.

Port Angeles School District students have free access to school breakfast and lunch if they need it. And many of them do.

With more kids facing food insecurity year after year, the need for Friday Food Bags is only growing. During the 22-23 school year, we supplied PASD with about 350 bags a week. In the 23-24 school year, that number grew to 700.

We know this is one of the most important programs we run here at the Port Angeles Food Bank. Adequate nutrition is crucial for children's physical and cognitive development. Hunger and malnutrition can hinder brain development, leading to learning difficulties, lower IQ scores, and reduced cognitive abilities. Childhood hunger perpetuates the cycle of poverty making it harder for children to excel academically and into their future.

At 700 bags a week, the Friday Food Bag Program costs the Port Angeles Food Bank $180,000 per year. For $250 dollars a year, you could sponsor one child’s Friday Food Bags for an entire school year. If 700 people read this letter and make that commitment, we can fund the Friday Food Bag Program for the 24-25 school year.

One thing we know to be true about this community is that we care about each other and when we come together to make something happen nothing can stop us. The students are our future. With our community holding them up, the future of Port Angeles is bright.

$250 spread over 12 months is just $21 a month. Whether you choose to give monthly, or all at once, you can make a difference for Port Angeles students.

Thank you for your commitment to our community.
